TULYP is composed of key local talent of young professionals who are committed to serving their local affiliate through social and civic engagement. Additional YP members are needed.
TULYP is one of 36 chapters of the National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP), which serves as the umbrella organization under the National Urban League to support the League’s 5 point empowerment agenda:
Education and Youth Empowerment: Ensuring that all of our children are well educated and prepared for economic self-reliance in the 21st century through college scholarships, early childhood literacy, Head Start and after care programs.
Economic Empowerment: Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency through job training, good jobs, homeownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.
Health and Quality of Life Empowerment: Working to build healthy and safe communities to eliminate health disparities through prevention, healthy eating, fitness, as well as ensuring access and complete access to affordable healthcare for all people.
Civic Engagement and Leadership Empowerment: Empowering all people to take an active role in determining the direction, quality of life, public policy and leadership in their communities by full participation as citizens and voters, as well as through active community service and leadership development.
Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment: Promoting and ensuring our civil rights by actively working to eradicate all barriers to equal participation in the all aspects of American society, whether political, economic, social, educational or cultural.
TULYP works with the Tucson Urban League on community service, professional development, and social activities to enhance the lives of its members. A committed workgroup of eight members has recreated the chapter's mission statement, bylaws, and developed a calendar of events that reflects its mission of mobilizing young professionals to engage in community service and professional development activities that support the goals of the Tucson Urban League.
TULYP activities in the past months have included a Meet 'N' Greet event on Martin Luther King Day; organization of a domestic and international relief effort in conjunction with local charity, WorldCare; a professional development seminar; and planning for the NULYP National Day of Service with two local organizations, Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation and the ONE Campaign. In addition TULYP members currently serve as mentors in the Tucson Urban League Intel Computer Clubhouse, which is one of only 95 similar programs worldwide that offer access to state-of-the-art computer technology for youth.
